About The Illustrator: Lesley McGee
My early artistic career was filled with landscape oils and gouache caricatures, mediums that I still enjoy, but which have made room for a passionate affair with vibrant pencil, pastel and ink. My work heavily features people and animals. I have previously had several pieces purchased by the National Zoo and am working towards a personal exhibition of cultural female portraits.
I am interested in illustrating children’s books, especially stories showcasing cultural diversity. My current personal project is writing and illustrating a picture book inspired by three gorgeous little friends of mixed Melanesian heritage. My ultimate goal is to be able to share a copy of the published book with the girls.
I completed a Diploma of Arts – Graphic Art at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. The course was heavily illustration based, providing with me a solid grounding in life drawing, technical illustration, hand lettering, natural form drawing and general illustration.
I have always loved beautifully illustrated children’s books and still discovering the infinite variety in bookstores. My life is filled with children of all ages and I love to be able to bring smiles to their faces with my quirky illustrations. Some of the older kids don’t mind them either.
Much of my work is self-generated or private commission, some of which has come via exposure on my Instagram and Facebook pages.
Currently working on my own picture book, an idea that began as a single illustration and which has slowly morphed into a complete story that I am currently illustrating.
I am using this experience as an opportunity to learn about the entire process of the picture book production. From initial writing and multiple rewrites, submission for critique, development of characters, storyboarding and illustration.
I use a mixture of mediums for my illustrations. It can be any combination of ink, water colour, pas- tel and polychromos coloured pencil.
I am currently building a creative portfolio for picture book illustration, developing my website and creating new illustrations so I spend most of my day working on illustrations.
